Well, their is a bit of growth between them in 14, Small Blessings, of course I don’t want to spoil anything for you…  But basically, Heatwave and Kade’s partnership is very slow developing and I do feel it has more to do with Kade’s own egocentric attitude rather than Heatwave’s curmudgeon-ism.  After all, between an alien robot of a nearly extinct species living in asylum, and a handsome firefighter from a large and loving family living in domestic comfort…  who has greater reason to be a little caustic and who has a greater rationale to be welcoming?

Still, the season isn’t over yet…

Rescue Bots Discussion: A boy and his firetruck

Something I like in Rescue Bots is the ever present, but still understated relationship between Heatwave and Cody.

Now, Rescue Bots is not exactly a program that I expect to have characters experience deep emotional turmoil. But I do feel Heatwave has a stronger element of tragedy to him than his fellow ‘Bots.  Given his aggressive personality, he does not enjoy living in a small island community, particularly so when he must hide his true identity and not receive appreciation for his work.  While he’s a good commander and cares about the lives and safety of others, he doesn’t seem to get joy from assisting the same way his teammates do.  In fact, he seems to prefer combat to rescuing.  His relationship with Kade is slow developing and continues to be rocky.  Whereas Blades, Boulder, and Chase have quickly settled into a very close relationship with their humans, Heatwave is almost constantly at odds with Kade.

Furthermore, Heatwave’s requests to join Optimus Prime’s team are constantly rebuked or flat out ignored.  Keep in mind that in this ‘verse, Optimus may very well be the only Prime left alive, and is also holding out with what could be the last of their known living Autobot comrades.  This is something akin to Jesus/George Washington/John Connor telling you to stop calling…

But Heatwave genuinely seems to like and trust Cody.  He knows Cody won’t walk all over him or ignore his wants, and he also feels comfortable asking Cody to help him smooth things over with his teammates at times.  They may not be explicit partners, but its the first human Heatwave truly bonds with.  What’s interesting though, is that Heatwave’s doesn’t often get a chance to demonstrate or validate this relationship.

For example, inThe Lost Bell, Heatwave is gung-ho about providing food and shelter for Cody.  He is given a prime opportunity to be Cody’s caretaker, thus proving his usefulness to his closest human friend…

But both Heatwave and the other ‘Bots are utterly hopeless at providing even the basics of sustenance, and wonder-boy shows that he more than capable of taking care of himself.  Better in fact, than perhaps the Rescue Bots can self-manage.  Note that its Cody’s knowledge of the pirate ship and his desire to explore ultimately gets them off the island too.

Things also come to a head in Countdown, a more dramatic example of Heatwave being denied an opportunity for heroism.  He is forced to watch Cody disappear right in front of him, unable to help.  His howl of frustration and rage against the robo-bugs in intense.  This is compacted with the knowledge that the Rescue Bots are only able to eventually save the Griffon Rock population in the fall-out shelter with the help of the crucial intelligence Cody obtained for them, at the cost of the kid’s own safety.  Cody is always one step ahead, even when he’s in danger.  Heatwave never gets to be the Big Damned Hero he probably wants to be to show Cody how much he means to the ‘Bots.

So in summation, not only does Heatwave get the perpetual short end of the stick by having to live in an environment he doesn’t find fulfilling…  He is constantly denied the opportunity to demonstrate heroism and gratitude to the one human he does seem to have an immediate connection with.

I guess that’s something consistent with the Autobots across both TFP and Rescue Bots…  The worse thing in the world to them is when they can’t provide even the most basic protection to the humans they love.
