Silent Hill, the Gender Binary, and Gender Essentialism

thegamingmuse:

Movies based on video games are, as a rule, rubbish.

Not that they can’t be fun – watching them can certainly inspire some laughs – and perhaps fans of the games will enjoy them.  But they still suck.  Whether it is due to movie industry moguls deciding to tear apart the canon of the games they are attempting to adapt, or because there is some medieval curse upon all gaming movies which forever dooms them, it is accepted that video game movies just aren’t up to snuff.

For one, so much is changed between the gaming screen and the big screen.  For another, there are many mechanics used in games to convey story and characterization that just don’t translate over.  And lastly, many games just have too much detail in their multiple hour story lines to ever squeeze into a two hour movie.  Perhaps the only way a good gaming movie could be made would be to do it in the style of The Lord of the Rings trilogy – but seeing as Peter Jackson is busy making The Hobbit, it’s unlikely he’ll be available anytime soon.

This brings me to today’s topic: Silent Hill, one of the most recent gaming movies, with a sequel coming sometime next year.

Very well written and interesting read.  Also in agreement with your conclusion.  As much as I like Rose and appreciate the abundance of well rounded female characters within the Silent Hill film, I was very disgusted with the “gender flip” of the protagonist be for the simple purpose of reinforcing the notion that only women can take up an action oriented role in the name of protecting children.  Heck, what made Harry such an interesting character from the Silent Hill game in the first place was how there was no real concern paid to a father risking life and limb for the daughter he loved.  Gender, and familial gender roles were challenged without incident in the game.  So why is it, years later, we have to go traditional?
