So, I beat Tomb Raider last night. Really good game, lots of fun. Yes, mechanics are predictable but its solid enough. The big draw really is the story and characters: so nice to play a game wherein the three female characters all make it out in one piece. Soundtrack was great too.

It’s an interesting contrast to Ni no Kuni (which I also recently completed) not only in terms of overall presentation, genre, and art-style obviously, but the general ideological themes underscoring each game.

NnK is a game about healing, growing, and helping everyone. It’s a story about finding hope even in the most brutal of times and acknowledging the capacity for good and repentance in every living creature. Bad things happen in Ni no Kuni, people suffer, people die, and somethings can’t be fixed. But, the game never tries to push a notion that every mistake can be undone, rather it argues that people, from anywhere and any time, can still move on from tragedy and forge their way through in spite of great pain.¬†

Tomb Raider 2013 is about survival, maturation, and hardening oneself as part of a natural process of becoming self-sufficient. Being ready to face a brutal, ugly, and disturbing world not only for your own sake, but for the people you love. It’s certainly more bleak than Ni no Kuni, but I understand where it’s coming from, and I respect the game’s choices. Furthermore, I enjoy playing a triple-A action/gunfight/adventure game with actual themes I can dissect and character arcs, not just for Laura mind you, but all the survivors. Something to think about…

Anyways, Laura/Sam for life.
